Collection Spotlight: Pierre Cardin "Space Age" Pink Satin Mini Dress

July 15, 2015 BIZ

At the peak of raised hemlines, this late-1960s shift mini-dress showcases the innovative craftsmanship of Pierre Cardin. With assistant design work for the Surrealist Elsa Schiaparelli and the ultra-refined Christian Dior under his belt, the influence of both legendary designers can be seen through this fusion of futurism and refinement. Cardin's attention to cut is evident in the silhouette, echoing his earlier adaptation of the traditional Nehru jacket (popularized by The Beatles) as it is balanced with his ongoing exploration of a "space-age" aesthetic. The trapunto stitching of cosmic, geometric motifs upon a palette of soft, boudoir-esque pink satin could be complimented with white stockings and a pair of silver, iridescent flats. This dress offers Cardin at his best, delivering a streamlined, minimal shape with details that promise maximal, luxurious appeal.
